Introduction to Belly Dance
Many experts believe that belly dance is one of the oldest forms of dance. It may be dated back as far as 17,000 years ago as a fertility ritual. It also began as preparation to ease the pain of childbirth in the ancient Middle East. Traces of it can be found up to 6,000 years ago, in some pagan societies, who used to worship a feminine deity. The term “belly dance” is believed to have come from a French term (danse du ventre) meaning “dance of the stomach.”
Belly dance became popular in the 1970’s when women were becoming more liberated and free. It is associated with spirituality and feminine empowerment. It has evolved into a cultural, sensual and exotic form of entertainment and socialization. Belly dancing is not limited to any age or body shape! Movements of the torso, isolation of the hips and the use of core muscles make it an excellent form of fitness!
