Burlesque with a Chair

Burlesque can be traced back to 5th Century BC in Athens, Greece.  Aristophanes, a playwright and poet wrote “Lysistrata” in which the wives of soldiers hole up in the Acropolis, depriving their husbands of sex until the termination of the War.  These women tease their husbands, guiding their minds towards sex, then lock it away.  The word “burlesque” refers to a type of parody or theatrical performance whose cast includes scantily-clad women.

The Burlesque art form first came to North America during the 1860s with the British Blondes. Their acts included elements of the now-popularized striptease, but also included dancing, singing, and political commentary.  Burlesque shows, complete with high class gowns, hats, and feather boas were popular at clubs or theaters in large cities like New York, Philadelphia and Chicago.  In 1934 the Mayor of New York City shut down shows due to morally based concerns for the lives and moral well being of the dancers.  This shutdown lead to a steady decline in the popularity of Burlesque.  In  1955 a revitalization briefly occurred, but it nearly disappeared until the 1970’s and 1980’s.  Burlesque has seen a rise in popularity since the 2010 feature film by the same name.
