Description

Sobek (also called Sebek) was the ancient Egyptian god of water. Over time he also became closely associated with surgery and with medicine.   Sobek was also associated with pharaonic power, fertility, and military prowess, but served dominantly as a protective deity.  He is depicted as the form of a man with a crocodile’s head or in crocodile form.  He was the  lord of Egypt’s wetlands and marshes. He was also lined  with the Nile, whose annual floods were said to be Sobek’s sweat. By controlling the Nile’s waters, Sobek also controlled the fertility of the rich Nile soil, which its agriculture depended on.  Sobek was believed to hold the power to revive the deceased’s senses and to restore their sight in the afterlife.  Sobek also protected the pharaohs from evil, magical curses and ill-intentioned sorcery.
